SETTING
The setting is the place (where), time (when) and reason (why) the actions/events occur.
INQUIRY QUESTION
*What is the context of the story? (Cultural, historical, social etc)
*What sensory descriptions are used? What affect does it have on the reader?
TASK Create a table. In the columns list various genres. In the rows write the environment or setting for that style. To assist you look at the images below and identify the genre they would relate to.

LANGUAGE
To create a particular atmosphere and emotional response from a reader, your writing should focus on the details which will help the reader visualize the scene. This can be achieved through 'sensory setting'.
Example
SIGHT: The torturous, twisting of the narrow, wet road slowed their progress.
SOUND: The police car shattered the peace of the early morning as it hee-hawed its way down the street with its tyres screeching and it’s radio crackling loudly.
TOUCH: The scorching bitumen was like a burning rash, stinging and piercing his body.
SMELL: The stench of the fumes rose in great clouds, burning flesh and petrol assaulted their nose.
TASTE: Filling their mouth with a bitter and burning sensation.
